You measured. You checked the chart twice. And she still lands right in that in-between spot where one size feels a smidge snug and the next one up looks like it might swallow her whole.
Welcome to the most common question we get, and honestly one of the trickiest, because the answer depends on the dress.
Here's the good news: this is a very solvable puzzle. Once you know what you're actually looking at, that between-sizes feeling stops being stressful and starts being an easy call.
If you take nothing else from this, take this: when she's between two sizes in a twirl dress, go up.
A slightly roomy princess dress still twirls beautifully. She grows into the bodice, the length gives her a proper gown moment, and you get more wears out of it across the seasons. A dress that's a touch too small does the opposite... it pulls at the shoulders, the skirt sits shorter, and the twirl she loves gets cut off before it really gets going.
The one exception is a fitted bodice piece where the whole magic depends on it sitting just so. More on that below.
A dress she'll reach for again and again next spring is a different decision than a dress for one specific birthday party this month.
For everyday and long-haul favorites, size up without a second thought. Our dresses are designed to grow with her, so that little bit of extra room in the fall becomes the perfect fit come spring, and it's still going strong the summer after. That's the whole point of "she's only little once"... you want the dress in the memories for as long as possible.
For a dress tied to one big moment on the calendar, lean toward the size that fits her best right now so she looks and feels her best that day.
Not every dress plays by the same size-up rule, and it's worth knowing which is which before you order.
A flowy maxi or a full cotton twirl dress is forgiving. Roomy reads as elegant, the length is a feature, and a sash or elastic waist takes up any slack. These are your easy "go up" pieces.
A portrait-style dress or a fitted bodice gown is less forgiving up top, because the shape is part of the charm. If she's truly between sizes on one of those, that's the moment to size down for the fit, or reach out to us before you order so we can talk through the specific piece.
Kids are rarely one tidy number head to toe, and that's completely normal. She might be a solid 5 in the shoulders and already stretching toward a 6 in length, or the other way around.
When the discrepancy is in the length, size up. A hem that hits a little long is dreamy and grows perfectly, and a too-short skirt is the one thing that's genuinely hard to fix. When the discrepancy is at the waist or shoulders on a fitted style, that's where the fit-first size wins.
And if she's right on the line with no clear tie-breaker? Picture her twirling. The size that lets that skirt fly is almost always the right one.
This is a big one, and it's specific to how a lot of our special pieces work. When a dress is made individually for you, like our pre-order and limited designs, you're often choosing a size for a child who will be a little bigger by the time it ships.
Take the Child 2026 Soldier Dress, one of our Mom and Me matching pieces. It's a pre-order made just for you with a September ship date, so if you order it while she's on the edge of a size, remember she's got weeks of growing between "add to cart" and "on her twirling in the living room." That alone often makes the size-up decision for you.
When in doubt on a made-to-order piece, message us. We'd genuinely rather answer a sizing question before your dress is cut than have you guessing... that's part of what the Only Little Once team is here for.
Parents sometimes worry that going up means she'll be swimming in fabric for months, and that's a fair thought. In practice, it rarely plays out that way with a well-designed dress.
A slightly generous fit on a soft, quality dress just looks like a proper gown on a little girl. The straps still sit, the waist still gathers, and the extra length reads as fairytale, not hand-me-down. No scratchies, no bunching, no fighting with a too-tight bodice at the shoulders.
And a few months later, when she hits the size dead-on, you'll be so glad you have more of that magic still ahead of you.
Flowy and twirly? Size up and let it grow. Fitted bodice or portrait style?
Fit her now, or ask us first. Pre-order or made-to-order? Almost always up, because she'll grow into it before it even arrives.
Being between two sizes isn't a problem to stress over. It's just a little fork in the road, and now you know which way to lean. Now go pick the one that twirls!
