Ever wonder why some characters get their own dress and others don't? This is a peek behind the curtain at how we decide, from the first spark of an idea to the day the dress finally drops. If your little one has ever asked "when are you making a dress for HER?", this one's for you!
Before anything else, we watch what little ones are actually excited about. Not the character a marketing calendar says is trending. The one your child is twirling around the living room pretending to be, the one she picks for pretend play again and again, the one whose story she wants read for the hundredth time.
That's the real signal. A character earns a collaboration dress when kids genuinely light up around her. We hear it from parents, we see it in the outfits kids reach for, and honestly, sometimes it's just a feeling in the room. When a character keeps coming up, we start sketching.
Here's where a lot of ideas fall apart, and we're okay with that.
A character can be beloved and still not translate into a dress a child can actually live in. Some looks are all sharp edges and stiff fabric and things that scratch. That's a hard no for us. Every dress we make has to pass two tests at the same time: does it capture the magic of the character, and can your little one wear it to a birthday party, twirl in it, sit criss cross applesauce on the floor, and stay comfy the whole time?
If a design only works as a stiff costume you take off after twenty minutes, it doesn't become a collaboration dress. We're not in the costume business. We make dresses kids want to wear on ordinary Tuesdays. So we ask ourselves early: can we keep the enchantment and lose the scratchies? If the answer is no, we set it aside until we figure out how.
Every single design has to twirl. This isn't a cute saying, it's a genuine step.
When we prototype a character dress, one of the first things we check is the movement. Does the skirt spin out into a full circle when she turns? Does it float back down soft and dreamy? A character dress that just hangs there flat is a missed opportunity, because half the magic of feeling like your favorite character is the moment you spin and the whole world blurs into color.
So a design has to earn its twirl. If a character's signature look is naturally flowy, that helps it move up the list. If we have to fight the design to get any movement, we keep reworking it until the twirl is there. (And let's be honest, who doesn't love a good twirl!?!)
Because our own kids grew up with fabric sensitivities, softness isn't a nice bonus around here. It's the starting point.
Once a character makes it past the "kids love her" and "we can make it wearable" stages, we get picky about the details. Where do the seams sit? Is the lining soft against the skin? Are the fasteners easy for little hands, or at least easy for you at the end of a long day? We think about how a dress feels the tenth time it's worn, not just how it photographs the first time.
We also design so a dress can grow with her when we can. A little extra length, thoughtful sizing, straps and details that give you room. Because the dresses that become true favorites are the ones she keeps reaching for season after season, not the ones she outgrows in a month.
A character dress has to hold up to real childhood. Playgrounds, tea parties, the drive to grandma's, the washing machine.
That means quality materials that survive being loved hard, and modest designs that let her move and play freely. We're making clothes for kids to be kids in. A dress that only works if she stands still isn't a dress, it's a photo prop, and that's not what we do.

By the time a character dress drops, it has passed through all of it: the love test, the wearability test, the twirl test, the softness check, and the quality check. That's why not every character makes the cut, and why the ones that do feel so special.
Our releases are limited because each design gets this kind of care. We'd rather make one enchanting, endlessly loved dress than rush ten that don't twirl right or scratch at the neck. When a new collaboration dress lands, you can trust it earned its place.
So the next time your little one asks when her favorite character is getting a dress, know that somewhere, there's a good chance we're already sketching. Watching. Twirling a prototype in front of a mirror to see if it spins just right. Because these years when they're only little once? They deserve dresses worth remembering.
